Stories About Records – Dj Nico

22 February 2022

Welcome to the 24th interview in our series, ‘Stories About Records’  where we ask our members and some of our favourite Djs about their most cherished 45.

We want to know what the record is, what it sounds like and why it is so important to you.

If you’re interested in being apart of this series drop us an email or sign up for our Newsletter to be informed when these wonderful stories drop.

Now it is our pleasure to present Dj Nico from Canada!

Firstly, tell us about yourself as a Dj and Collector of 45s, how long have you been playing and collecting, why 45s, what was the first 45 you were given and also the first 45 you bought? Do you still have them?

I started collecting records when I was 16 – mostly LPs, EPs, 12” and some 45s.

I did not get heavy into collecting 45s until about 20 years ago.

I bought 45s because of their ease of travel, sound quality, and flipsides that one could not get on comps or albums.

I was purchasing girl groups to start.

I think the first 45s were Chic – Le Freak, Olivia Newton John – Physical, Culture Club – Karma Chameleon.

I no longer have any of those.

My first 45s that I bought myself was likely U2, from the Joshua Tree.

I still have “With or Without You”.

What is your most cherished 45? Why is it so important to you? What is it’s story (label, year, artist, musicians), where did it come from?

My most cherished 45 is by Dee Dee Sharp – What Kind of Lady (Gamble, 1968) b/w You’re gonna miss me (when I’m gone).

I picked this 45 up in February 2019 from People’s Records in Detroit.

I was able to see a special box of selects the store owner has.

I was very familiar with Dee Dee Sharp’s early 60s singles but did not know about this record, listened to it and loved it.

She married her producer Kenny Gamble the year before this single was released.

The flip is a fantastic slow burner.

Very much a stomping Philly soul record.

Thanks Dj Nico for sharing your most cherished 45 with us, I now love it and require a copy!
